Agreed that a little late is better than early. Doing it too early denies the benefit of flushing the initial oil after the engine has run in for what BMW has determined as an appropriate run-in period. If you do it early, some run-in contaminants are going to be present in the long-term oil, and the earlier you perform the change, the less benefit you will receive.

On some level, this is all a bit of a grey area. There is nothing magic about 1200 miles, and the difference between 1300, 1400 is insignificant. Even after that point, your engine is still going to be breaking itself in to some extent.
