The housing for the crankshaft and bearings may be out of alignment, for example. I've heard people insist that when bearings and shaft have to be replaced, you're wasting your time if you don't also check the housing / engine block. In other words, something is likely causing them to fail other than simply weak bearings.

Ditto. Which is why more than a handful who had replaced their crank bearings had their sound return after a while as there are other parts that should have been changed but was not changed.
