If you want to try the track without committing to a helmet you can get a helmet liner. Some tracks have them for events for free or a few dollars. Alternately you can get one from a local motorsports shop or possibly a go-karting establishment. Worst case scenario is you can use a cold weather balaclava but you may pass out from the heat that builds up in your helmet at some point...

Just follow the same instincts (and your instructor) that kept you from getting pressured by a bunch of morons before and you will have a safe fun time at the track.
