Check out NASA HPDE events, they provide instructor that rides with you
and you drive at whatever pace your comfortable with learning lines etc.
Also the 2day M-School is a great introduction with their cars
and top level instruction.
I hear ya about the scary factor of tracks with close walls and barriers.
I'm planning to stay well within my limits when there is low margin for error.
Your not too far from Chuckwalla Valley Raceway which is an awesome track
with nothing but dirt to run off into.
