i use these.
the headphone output is amplified, the audio out from the dock connector is line level.
so you are not using the built in amp in the ipod/iphone= better quality audio
but for just testing you can use the headphone out
you just want to know is the sub working correctly or not
if it sounds just as low, then the issue is with the sub or amp
if it sounds great then its probably the LC2i
