I doubt there will be a coupe-only (really, that should be coupe/convertible) generation again. The HiPo sedan segment is too big to ignore any more and plus BMW has given up some potential M3 sales to Audi and Mercedes because some people simply need a four door car.

Furthermore, I think the pattern you notice is arbitrary. IMHO, E36 is not forgotten at all. If it gets less mention, its just because its old. The E30 is obviously older still, but that was the first M3 so it will naturally hold a certain level of popularity because of this.
