Don't discharge it unless you are using it for its purpose which is to shoot another human being (yeah as bad as that sounds, that's the intent of the weapon if used). I don't agree with brandishing weapons as warning or shooting warning shots into the air. If you get your gun out, and especially if you discharge it, you better do it right. Otherwise, just leave it be.
