I thought for vehicles to be street legal they had to have all the government mandated crap on board such as three dozen air bags, ten cat converters, side impact protection, 50mph bumpers set to be at a certain height, etc.

While I love the raw potential of the Ariel....I am confused how it can really be street legal? If so, why can't BMW start making rockets like that for us purists?

IIRC it gets tagged as a kit car. The rules you're talking about aren't to make a vehicle "street legal" they're to make it legal for a manufacturer to sell in the US as a production car. I think they get around that by shipping the car into the US with no engine in it, selling it as a kit, and then you pay the dealer to install the engine. It wouldn't surprise me to see the government close this loophole up in the near future, so get 'em while they're hot!

I'd LOVE to have one personally.
