You can find the answer in the history. The predecessor is actually a 1968 Toyota 2000GT, which was another Yamaha/Toyota joint venture that was more expensive (and faster around the race track) than a Porsche 911 Carrera in the day and went on to win a lot of races. Toyota only built 369 of those.

Today, a mint condition 2000GT auctions at more than $200,000.
