I have been wondering the same since the GTS was first announced. I can see the logic in the M3 GT2 and Z4 GT3 keeping the P65B40 since the longer stroke might mean less durability and those engines are already power-limited by series regulations and such anyway. But it seems like the M3 GT4 would be a great candidate for the 4.4L motor. Perhaps it has something to do with the small number of GTS being made and non-global availability. They want the GT4 to remain legal in as many series as possible, and they might not meet homolongation requirements if they go with the 4.4L motor.
