I would agree that most aftermarket oem replacement filters have very little difference. I put the biggest K&N cone that would fit in the airbox of my S2K and I can't say I heard or felt anything more than the standard cone filter.
However, the e9x M3 filter has multiple layers including paper and charcoal elements. Pull the filter from the airbox and take a look. My opinion is that it's not so much that the AFE is so great, but more that the stock filter has more inherent restrictions.
