I actually visited something similar in the 1980s. I lived in Midland, Texas at the time and went to meet Jim Hall (the Chaparral and Indy racing guy) to ask some questions about I guy I was thinking of going to work with. Out in back of the shop was a race track. I think, if I recall correctly, it was called Rattlesnake Raceway. It was just under a mile and pretty snake-like. Of course, they tested cars out there in the hey-day of Chaparral.
It was like a museum in the shop, with several of the Chaparral sports cars in race worthy condition. Jim was very cordial and straight talking about the guy I was considering going to work for.
I think I remember reading that either Jim Hall or Hap Sharp had a big "off" at Rattlesnake and needed extensive surgery and recovery to be put back together. It's like, pavement, then cactus and easy to ball up a car with a roll. Of course there was probably no safety equipment, but the drive to the Midland Memorial Hospital was only about ten-miles.
