This is true. I have shaved rubber bits, and burnt paint on the springs to prove it. With a 25mm you'll need a 5mm spacer up front to clear the clubsports. If it were me, I'd get a 18x10 +20mm. Run some extra camber up front and you should be good. You can even go lower than that in the rear, there's room. I run 18x10.5 +15mm on 285/35's in the rear with no issues.
I never thought about removing the helper spring to get the perch higher. Good idea.
