Big thanks again!!! I tried it just now in preparation for my track event tomorrow and it worked like a charm.
Just want to clarify that
this method works even if the caliper has slid below the pad carrier (i.e. if the pads are worn quite a bit). I wasn't sure about it until I tried today. There is enough gap for leverage. NO MORE C-Clamp up front! (For the rears I still need that clamp though).
