OP, forgot to mention:
When we did our ED-like trip, we loaded custom maps onto a Garmin (that can accept custom maps EDIT: created easily on Googlemaps using the free Tyre software program) and it worked flawlessly.
Maybe one thing to look into for a future trip.
Unfortunately the newer Garmin no longer have that capability in favour of a proprietary system that sucks according to Garmin users.
At any rate, I am sure that with the advances in navigation software, we'll have that capability in our smartphones in the future. I love the custom maps because they'll route us "into" and "through" (rather than around) the mountain passes (or anything else) that we want.
