I have a pair of stock tail lights that I had painted at Autohouse in Nashville, TN. I left the white stripe un-painted for cosmetic purposes mainly. I'm not 100% sure how the shop painted them but to my understanding it was a mixture of paint and clear coat. They are dark but you can easily see the blinkers/brake lights through them. There are no cracks, peeling or any flaw in the lights or the paint.
I had this done in Tennessee and never had a problem but when I moved up to Minnesota I quickly found out MN police don't like them. I got pulled over 3 times in 1 week by the same officer. These came off my 2008 E92 M3 and are stock OEM.
I am not looking for trades, I already bought new lights.
