I’m with the not cutting pipes. At least I am now. I cut them twice on my old E39 M5 (x-pipe and then boxes), and I just wasn't as happy with the integrity of the whole system clamped up as I would have been had it used the OEM connections – which I realise would have been tricky with the M5 as it was a one piece system.
Then when I came to sell I had to some how distract the buyer from looking under the car only to see everything clamped back together again, certainly not something I would want someone to see on the M3 if/when I sell it. It would just bring unwanted questions. Given the M3 does have distinct points at which it can be separated it seems logical to take advantage of them.
