The M version was never going to get the S65 V8. That engine dies late next year after the E9x M3 is retired. The Z4 M will get a turbo 6 just like the X3 M, X4 M, and the next M3.

That said, BMW has been offering I4, I6, and V8 in the 5 series for well over a decade. The I4 has not been offered in the US, but that will all change later this year. There will be the 528i I4, 535i I6, and 550i V8.
