There are 11 shift modes available (5 automatic & 6 manual) and can be preset to an "M" button on the steering wheel if you choose the M-Drive option included in the Technology package. If not, you can simply select a D (automatic) or S (manual) mode by toggling the shift lever without the need to access iDrive.

There are 5 automatic modes (D1-D2) from least to most aggressive shift programs. These modes virtually operate like a true automatic, in some ways even smoother. These are the equivalent of putting it in "D" except there are 5 shift programs to choose from to suit your driving style and comfort level.

There are also 6 manual modes (S1-S6) from least to most aggresive shift programs. Accessing S6 requires you to turn off stability control completely. These are all sequential manual programs which need to upshifted with the shift paddles or lever or else it will bounce of the the rev limiter.
