I figured a first-time track day would be a good excuse/way to wear the current ones out so I can move to the fresh set for next track day. Does anyone advise this approach?? According to tirerack "As any autocrosser or racer who has tread rubber shaved off of his tires will tell you, low tread depth tires respond quicker."

thanks for your advice.

I would absolutely use the track as an excuse to finish up your tires. As long as it's not a wet track slick or low tread tires work best and have less heat build up than full tread tires. As long as there are no cords showing continue to track them.
