I've used
this Slik monopod with some success. It collapses pretty small and you can attach your camera to it and just hold the collapsed monopod until you need to extend it or let the monopod hang from your camera if you use a neck or shoulder strap. It has a spring loaded section to allow for minor (3"-4") changes in height without fiddling with the leg releases. Makes a great walking stick as well.
