Couple of tips:

*Use a lighter to heat the leather makes it easier to separate (used a flat head small screwdriver). Leather does not burn so no damage done to it. As already noted the OEM M3 takes longer than the m5 to separate the ring.

*Cut out enough for the tab to go in cleanly. When reinstalling, place a cloth over the ring then pound it in

*I would not glue due to all the small adjustments needed to make the m5 shift boot look clean.

All together 40 minutes while watching football. Happy with the results
Puzzled as my leather was definitely too thick to just tuck in and work. Model number I ordered for the m5 knob was 25112284205 which I believe is used in the newer m3 also.

There is an earlier version that apparently also works. Maybe the leather was thinner for that one. Can you confirm which model number was yours?
