420hp V8 vs 430hp V6
which is faster on straight line race?
That is a very tricky question to answer, I would reckon the M3 will eventually overhaul the S4 but might take it to about 130~135mph to do it.

In stock form the two match up like this (all times supplied are from Europe where both have been tested)

0-100km/h M3 :4.6s vs 5.0s : S4v6
0-160km/h M3 :10.2s vs 11.5s : S4v6
0-200km/h M3 :15.4s vs 18.6s : S4v6

These times were from one magazine (AMS) to show a fair reference point and Europe's method of testing acceleration times, if you were to take both to a dragstrip and use their method of timing (i.e.1ft rollout) then the M3 will regain the lead a little earlier. But if the surface is less than ideal I would say that the M3 would never regain control of the race.
