I think you've got the right idea, but probably need a thicker piece of aluminum or ceramic/aluminum sandwich for the best fix. I find it hard to believe that no one's making a performance mod for this. common problem.
Anyone reading got a 2010 M3? I'm curious if BMW added a heat shield yet. It'd be sooo easy for them to fix this.
