The person who said 4g will be 3 yrs away must be with ATT, cuz it will take them about that timeframe. Vz is a great company and I'm glad to see they are leading the communications industry. It's also possible Vz may be releasing 4g phones by Thanksgiving. Just some inside tip from a reputable Vz employee.
Considering that VZ only has ~89 million wireless customers and they are still building out their 4G network which is LTE and they publicly said it will be a 3 to 5 year process I think you miss heard the internal communication at your VZ job.

To correct your information they will be able to support 100 million connection by the end of the year, I am not sure what they mean by connections and I do not believe that translates into 100M customers, since at any one time the phone could be connected to 2 or 3 towers and each is consider a connection until a hand off is made. It is called over provisioning and it required so you can move form one location to another.

Also they said they it will be only in 30 cities by the end of 2010, so the question is with a 4g phone work in a 3g network, may be or maybe not, since LTE is completely different then CDMA that means the phone would have to have two radios to be able to roam outside a 4g zone, kind of sounds like a power hog to me.
