As an example, my original front brake pads on my 330 lasted 65k miles. I'm lucky to get 1k miles from track pads. Your wheel fastners are seeing a lot more abuse and MUCH higher lateral loads. Probably 1G+ especially in cars with modified suspensions and r-comp tires.

Which is why if you are a beginner or intermediate...you can get away with longer intervals for wheel fasteners. IMO, as everyone has said...a year is about the limit. Anything longer could get ugly. It is highly likely that the wheel fasteners will last longer but why chance it. Imagine a wheel falling off at the limit of grip in a fast sweeper...
