In the one pic, and maybe it is a point of reference issue, it looks like the shifter is in backwards. If you run your hand down the front of the shifter, the bend should carry your hand towards the dashboard. It seems like this is what you are saying above the picture, but it looks like it is oriented in the opposite direction in the pic.
EDIT - remove the comment about the locking nut - saw you mentioned that!

Good catch, this pic was taken before the shifter was connected, I'll have to get a new pic up
