I'm not 100% sure but from feedback I've read on Amazon.com it sounds like the unit comes with a separate power cable so perhaps it can power up independently of the 360? Though that makes me wonder why it'd have to be part of the 360 at all
I also read the unit has USB ports on it so you won't lose a port when you hook it up I suppose.
Maybe you could ask your local game store to be sure
