Yes, the M3 is bought by younger people because it is more attainable (cheaper) and has a younger image to it (seems like every teenager in LA has an M3 these days). But does that mean it is less of a car than the M5?

If you cruise on over to the M5 boards for a moment you'll see that they compare their cars to 911s and ferraris (a lot own all three) and it seems like the M5 is in a whole league above the M3. Is it just the price of the M5 (and the 500hp) that elevates it? Is the M5 supposed to play with exotics while the M3 is just a boy's car? I have never heard an M3 owner talk about taunting a Ferrari before.

In my eyes the M3 is quicker than the M5 in everything (save for maybe straight line) but the M5 is still considered the benchmark for some reason.

Does it come down to price range in the end? Do people choose between a 911 and an M5 because they set a price range that excludes the M3?
