Cost for college

I have a question for those of you that are in college or have recently graduated. I am trying to find out a real world average of what it costs for tuition and books for a semester of college. Obviously there is going to be differences between community colleges and state colleges or private colleges. I'm just trying to get some averages because I have a son who is in his first year of college at the Culinary Institute of America (he wants to be a chef). I was amazed at the cost of that school (36K per semester) and he is telling me that is average for a college and I would be paying that much regardless of where he chose to go. I was more under the impression that he could find a school for less than 10K per semester. I'm I just behind times or is he more in tune with the true costs of a college education? The bottom line is I will pay, or help pay for whatever he chooses, but I was interested in other peoples take on the subject.
