Definitely an E36 are the most competitive of the M3s at autocross. I can imagine an E30 can be better but E30 M3s are so rare you rarely see them. That said, Miatas and S2000s regularly run circles on M3s at autocross.
You should figure out what class you want to run in and find out what cars are best for that class's rules.
I run ST-U class and it was mostly dominated by E36 M3s and Evos. I had an Evo and it was competitive. Now with the E90 M3, it can't keep up with the top runners anymore.
