IMO there's a level in which there's marginal return for increased brightness. Hence the popularity of the nice LED options vs. HID.
The operating temps of the HID's worry me as well. Your turning your headlights into small ovens. There's a lot of heat being generated there with your lows, cornering, and HID AE's.

In regards to temps, the LEDs get as hot as any halogen easily, that's why they have to have that massive heat sink.
