Might have been a regular SS with the 1LE package, they look pretty similar to the ZL1 if you're not paying close attention on the outside they're a little slower than the M3 at high speeds

The ZL1 convertible isn't as quick from 100-150 as the M3 (14.2 seconds for the M3 vs. 16.3 seconds according to C/D), so I guess anything's possible, the aero on the M3 is certainly much better
