It does alter the clutch travel, and helps make the feel of the pedal better as it doesn't alter tension as you get near the end of the travel with the OEM stop. Some folks remove the spring to get rid of this difference in feel. The clutch is fully disengaged, so it doesn't make a difference there. The gear changes are smoother as the feel is more consistent and you can punch the clutch in and out with more confidence/consistency when shifting quickly.
