Thanks! I keep the Android display on all the time nowadays anyway, as I've hardwired it to the battery w/a distribution block. I bypassed the battery this way, enabling the camera to work as a security camera by staying on all the time.
I'm thinking that by using Tasker or AutomateIt, I can make it do what you're referencing, removing the relays from the equation.
I've have to update this thread over the next week, as I've changed a few things that I'm pretty pleased about.
