My understanding is that the heat sink is to keep the LED circuitry cool and within operating temperature. Those little epoxy boards will melt if they get too hot, what too hot is IDK, but I don't think those diode's are anywhere near HID's operating temps.
I've seen a LUX/EAS or someones comparison to emitted heat energy from the various options. I'm guessing you've probably seen it as well, I'll see if I can find it.
