Double parking like that will get you two cars squeezed even tighter on both sides of you in NY. I guess the only thing I would suggest is finding end spots if your lucky and hugging the end. But ANYTHING that attracts more attention to your car could also get you vandelized.
I say screw it and enjoy life. I hate paint dings just like everyone else but NOTHING guarantees against them. I think about the previous cars i've owned that I didn't care as much as the BMW. Yeah I've gotten paint chips but that was from not caring at all and not touching them up over a 10 year period. Accept it
