I think the circumstance where one would want to be able to truly skip gears is this: Cruising in 7th gear, at normal to slow highway speeds then wanting to have immediate and maximum acceleration. Typically you would want 3rd or 4th gear skipping all others. I have not tried this much myself with SMG.
