Any car with 500+ hp and decent enough handling can put out a good lap time. That doesn't make it a good track car. It just makes up for lost time in the corners in the long straights. The current gen M3 is too big and heavy already for a track car. Yes we go to the track and enjoy it but I guarantee a sub 3000 lbs sports car would be far more fun at the track regardless of the lap times it puts down.

The x5m puts down respectable lap times as well. Does that make it a good track car?
