How is throttle response adjusted in sport?

As I understand it the sport or sport plus options only affect the way the engine responds to the corresponding position of the throttle pedal. In my E46 when I switch back and forth I get an obvious difference based on the position of the pedal. If at a constant speed I press the sport button the car will surge and when I de-select the car slows. Again a direct function of the pedals position.

On the E92 it almost seems as if the engine is behaving differently depending on which setting I choose. At a set speed when toggling between the sport settings the car does not surge but if accelerating it does. It almost feels like the car is faster or more responsive but I know this is not what is advertised.

Anyone know what the difference is?
