I currently own a '10 GTI and yeah, it's a biotch of a situation. DI basically makes all the lovely detergents and additive package worthless since your fuel is going straight into the chamber and not being sprayed over the tops of the valves.
But, that's one of the pitfalls of the design - great for fuel economy and power - lousy for preventing buildup. And your motor sounds like a diesel at idle. Wife first heard it and asked if I'd gotten a TDI instead
