Update:
Dealer just called and the broken exhaust valve spring will be replaced and repaired under warranty according to BMW NA. I wasn’t able to ascertain if this was due to the issue being caused by a defect or if they just wanted to avoid a stressful confrontation with me if it was an over-rev.
Once I get the car back I’ll report on how well it is running and if they were able to elaborate on the actual cause of the issue.
