At 8000 miles/year, the annual depreciation on my 325ci has been (I know it's no M3, but for the record):

1st year: $2165 (+$1500 discount I got off MSRP)
2nd year: $2350
3rd year: $3000
4th year: $2420

MSRP was $33500, we are talking about 30% depreciation in 4 years for a 3-series in the US. The M3 might depreciate a bit faster since it costs more, but not much faster. The 30% in 4 years figure is consistent with what you are reporting for your E46 M3.

The above figures don't include tire costs. The 4th year ended last month, and I had my service guy redo both front and rear rotors for free before warranty expired, so I should be maintenance fee free until I get a hold of a M3 somehow within the next 3-9 months. Free maintenance rocks!
