LOL @ "divorced from diversity" being the cause of his problems. People self segregate naturally because of instinct and fear of venturing outside of comfort zones.
OP dont throw yourself into a new situation that you are not comfortable with. It will only drive up your anxiety and if that totally new situation fails it will only discourage you more. Start with something small and work your way out from there.
