Not true at all. And recommended is considered acceptable. The two are not mutually exclusive here.
Fact: I am running a 285/35/18 on a 18x11 et 18 and it's perfect. I too was a little worried that it may be slightly (and I mean ever so slightly) stretched but no. Its perfect and still meaty. See all my pics.
If the manufacturer states what the recommended sizes are then I trust them..
I have run all the gammut (SP?) of sizes on varying widths of wheels and I really like the 285 on the 11"
edit: one should add that all tires are NOT created equal and my situation is a 285 Nitto.
