True race cars have to engage the drive in every gear. Yet they seem to do just fine on race tracks.
As to the SW, its a design issue. VW has just decided they want the auto shifting. Yes its a compromise, but its one to keep the non hard core drivers happy
Its not a mechanical limitation.
