I didn't have to pay SC sales tax.
If I remember correctly, in theory you have to, but in practice it's not enforced. BMW will send you a letter telling you about the tax, but also mentioning that they've never heard of anyone actually paying it. Or something to that effect. So, unless you're stopped by a SC cop in a bad mood, I doubt that you will have to pay it.
