Role of the Connecting Pipes

I had a general question on the role of the connecting pipes specifically for the exhaust. There are obviously a lot of different mufflers and x-pipes, but the connecting pipes seem to be an afterthought as a way to make it from point A to point B. Are the connecting pipes considered to be part of the axle back exhaust or could they be interchangeable as well? Do they add or subtract anything to either the performance or sound? Could unwanted resonance, sound or drone be caused by the connecting pipe rather than the exhaust? Curious as to everyone's thoughts and if there was any research on this topic. Thanks
