I thought XII was pretty good. Definitely not the best Final Fantasy, but worth a play. I personally liked the Gambit system in FFXII, but it can be annoying at first and takes awhile to get used to. Like anything once you get it down it's actually pretty fun.
My big beef with the system is spells. If I'm casting a spell and a mob is too, he casts his, then it takes forever for me to cast mine while he can sit there and just constantly keep hitting me over and over while my spell is loading, stupid. It makes spells like flare and holy useless unless you wanna get whacked around a few hundred times while you try to get off a spell that doesn't do much damage to begin with.
Didn't really care for the characters all that well either. Though Balthier and Basch were awesome.
