I was thinking along those lines too, or maybe a gold tee holder or some sort. I was so curious, I had to check it out!
I don't think the M3 exhaust has such a valve. But, I don't have my damn car yet to see for myself. But from what I have read, there is no such thing.
One manufacturer does make such an exhaust for the M3 though. The idea is to keep it quiet when you need too (cops, etc.), and let her wail when you want too....maybe that is what you saw?
